CIES Conference 2010

Extension of the proposal submission deadline, the new deadline is October 15th.

We are pleased to announce a two-week extension of the deadline for the 2010 CIES Annual Meeting proposal submissions from October 1st, to October 15th, 2009.

1. Membership requirement to submit presentation proposals

Since 2006 to the CIES has required that a presenter at the Annual Meeting must be a member of the Society. We have found that it is necessary to take the final step in the implementation of this policy which is, as other professional organizations require, to ask for membership ID in order to submit a proposal. This is being implemented for the CIES2010 conference. If the submission is jointly-authored, the lead author must be a member of the CIES. This makes it possible that once accepted, the sessions will not be taken out of the program because the presenter or presenters are not CIES members.

2. Transition to the on-line submission system

In an attempt at managing the large number of proposals we receive every year, an on-line proposal submission system was introduced last year. Although this was an improvement over other years, the system did not work as well as expected because it was not able to identify members from non-members. Thus much work was done manually. By requiring that membership identification be obtained before submitting a proposal (see # 1 above) we hope to make the process of producing the program more efficient.

3. Conference organizer

Similarly in order to manage the growing numbers of members attending the conference, in 2008 the CIES contracted with a conference organizer. The CIES 2010 is the first conference that will be fully organized by our conference organizer at IUC.

Purpose of Workshop

Every year CIES holds a New Scholars Workshop at the annual CIES conference. This all-day workshop is a unique opportunity for Ph.D. and Ed.D. students to discuss their dissertation research with other doctoral students and experienced scholars in the field. This will improve your work and it will strengthen links between international education programs.

Time/Format of Workshop 

The doctoral candidate workshop will begin at 8:00 a.m. and end at 4:00 p.m. on either Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday March 2, 3, & 4, 2010. In order to allow the greatest number of new scholars to participate, students will be selected to participate in ONE full day. The maximum number of students asked to participate each day will be 15, with a total acceptance of 45 doctoral students. The workshop will consist of formal presentation sessions, each followed by a feedback period, to allow participants adequate time for constructive discussion with students and resource faculty. Candidates are required to participate the entire day.

I trust you had a restful and productive Summer.  Plans for the CIES 2010 conference are under way.    The proposal submission deadline – October 1- is fast approaching.  We are sending you this message because our records indicate that you are the chairperson of your SIG.  As the SIG chair we invite you to contact members of your respective SIG and remind them to submit their proposal before the October 1 deadline.

Proposals should be submitted to a general pool via the CIES conference website and each SIG chair (or one designate from the SIG) will receive access to the proposal database for the respective SIG .  The chair of the SIG (or designate) will manage the proposal review process and send results of the review process to the CIES 2010 program chair, Reitu Mabokela ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ).  Once the review process has been completed, the SIG chair (designate) will also be responsible for coordinating the panels and other sessions for the SIG and forward this information to Reitu Mabokela, for inclusion in the CIES conference program.

Within the next week to ten days, you will receive directions indicating how to access the proposals for your particular SIG, as well as other details regarding the timeline for developing and completing the conference program.
