Report on October 15 Submissions and Transition Year Grace Period

Dear CIES members:

We thank the more than 700 members who submitted individual or panel proposals by our October 15 deadline.  We recognize these submissions demanded your learning and adapting to a new system, especially since we introduced new features into this system at the same time that the CIES has moved to a calendar year membership term (as opposed to the former, 12-month system). We are pleased by the overall positive response to the call for proposals, yet realize there is room for improvement, and appreciate those who have taken the time to send us feedback.

There is much excitement around the conference theme, and anticipate an excellent program, which will include, among many other events, professional development workshops on the use of small- and large-scale databases for comparative research. More information on these program highlights is forthcoming.

As of now the CIES 2010 program committee has received numerous requests from colleagues—including many from outside the U.S. - who asked to submit a proposal after the October 15th deadline.  The program committee recently met on this issue and conferred with the CIES Executive Committee.  In order for CIES 2010 to be as inclusive as possible, and given that this is a transitional year to a new system, we have decided to allow a grace period of 15 more days for those who missed the October 15 deadline.  We therefore invite all those who wish to submit proposals to do so between now and Friday, November 6 at 5 pm EST, when the on-line system for submission of proposals will be closed. You can find the call for proposals, guidelines, and instructions as to how to become a CIES member (required for presenting at the annual conference and to login into the system) here, at the CIES2010 Annual Conference website. Please help to spread the word to those colleagues who may want to take advantage of this opportunity!

For those who submitted their proposals on or before October 15, we have already begun the review process and you should receive your proposal acceptance notice, as promised, on November 15. For those submitting at the later deadline our goal is to notify you on the results of the review process by the end of November.

We also want to encourage you to become a reviewer! Please log into the system and help make this a rich and successful experience for old-timers and new-comers alike!

Warm regards,

Maria Teresa Tatto, Associate Professor

President-Elect Comparative International Education Society (CIES)
